Profile: Crystal Canney President, Canney Communications Crystal Canney is a national award winning journalist. She was a reporter for 20 years in Maine and Massachusetts. Among her many awards, she received first place in the country from the Annie E. Casey Foundation for her series of reports on impoverished children. She has won numerous Associated Press, Maine Association of Broadcasters Awards. She was also the first Maine journalist to report from New York City live during 9/11. She earned a reputation as a hard nosed, investigative reporter. Canney left journalism in 2005 to work as the spokesperson for Governor John Baldacci and was instrumental in his re-election. Following her work surrounding policy, messaging, and imaging she moved over to work on the most significant policy in state government -- the budget. She was the Associate Commissioner of Finance for two and a half years where she oversaw multi-million dollar budgets and a staff of 350 people. Together, they provided human resources, finance and personnel for the largest agencies in state government. Canney then went on to be the communications director for Citizens Unified for Maine's Future, a political action committee which in November of 2009 secured a victory with the largest defeat of the taxpayer bill of rights (TABOR) issue in the country. Canney Communications opened November 4, 2009, the day after the election.
